From grand cru to premier grand cru classé
Three ranks in the classification, and three great names that have left it. The rank tells you the château, the table tells you the price.
Outside the classification
Cheval Blanc, Ausone and Angélus, formerly premiers A, withdrew from the 2022 classification. They remain among the most expensive wines in Bordeaux.
Premiers grands crus classés
Pavie (A), Troplong Mondot, Beau-Séjour Bécot, Canon-la-Gaffelière, La Mondotte, Clos Fourtet, Pavie Macquin, Valandraud (B): wines that age for ten to thirty years.
Grands crus classés
Soutard, Clos des Jacobins, Quinault l’Enclos, La Dominique, Faugères, Péby Faugères, Fombrauge, Pavie Decesse, Monbousquet: ready at around six years, often at the price of a Médoc second wine.
Unclassified grands crus
Lynsolence, Fleur d'Arthus, Pierre de Lune, La Grâce Dieu, Bellevue Mondotte: the grand cru appellation without the rank. From the simplest to the rarest.
What makes a Saint-Émilion
On the right bank of the Dordogne, around the medieval village listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Merlot dominates, with Cabernet Franc: rounder wines, ready sooner than those of the Médoc. The best are on the limestone plateau and slopes around the town, or on the gravel near Pomerol.
Two appellations: Saint-Émilion and the stricter Saint-Émilion grand cru. The classification only covers the second. To the north, satellites such as Montagne-Saint-Émilion give the same Merlot, for less. The Saint-Émilion classification is revised roughly every ten years; the 2022 one runs until 2032. A château can move up, move down or withdraw.

- A premier grand cru ten years old or more: rack of lamb (wine with lamb), game birds (wine with game).
- A grand cru classé: magret, confit (wine with duck), rib steak (wine with beef).
- A young grand cru: roast poultry (wine with poultry), pressed cheeses or a brie (wine with cheese).
Which Saint-Émilion for which occasion
For a wedding, a grand cru classé on every table: Merlot pleases the most people (which Bordeaux for a wedding). As a gift, a premier grand cru in a wooden case (which wine to give). For a birthday, the year of birth (birth-year vintage).
Saint-Émilion or Saint-Émilion grand cru?
Two appellations on the same land. Saint-Émilion grand cru requires lower yields and longer ageing; it is not a rank. Only châteaux in this appellation can be classified.
How many châteaux are classified in Saint-Émilion?
In the 2022 classification, fourteen premiers grands crus classés, two of them A (Figeac and Pavie), and seventy-one grands crus classés. Cheval Blanc, Ausone and Angélus are no longer in it, by choice.
How long to keep a Saint-Émilion?
Three to ten years for a simple unclassified grand cru, five to twenty for a grand cru classé, ten to thirty for a premier grand cru, longer for Cheval Blanc or Ausone. The table applies these rules to each line; it is not a tasting note.
