The château
At the top of the Mondot hillside, the highest point in the appellation, east of the town. The reinsurance group SCOR has owned it since 2017. The estate also has a restaurant, Les Belles Perdrix, in the middle of the vines.
Mostly merlot, with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Premier grand cru classé B since 2012. Ready at around ten years, it lasts thirty. Second wine: Mondot. The appellation's other châteaux are on the Saint-Émilion wines page.
The 37 hectares surround the hill, between 60 and 110 metres above sea level, facing every direction. The soil has one particular feature: ancient clays, the Agenais molasse, eroded everywhere else in the appellation, here cover the starfish limestone in a thick layer. They store water in winter and release it in summer. The vineyard is 85% merlot, 13% cabernet sauvignon and 2% cabernet franc.
What to serve it with
- A vintage of fifteen years or more: game (wine with game), a civet.
- A younger vintage: rack of lamb (wine with lamb), duck breast (wine with duck), whose meat suits merlot.
- With cheese: well-aged pressed cheeses (wine with cheese).
Which vintage for which occasion
For client gifts, a Saint-Émilion premier cru in a wooden case (year-end client gifts). For a birthday, the birth year, if the table has it (birth-year vintage). For a dinner after a visit to Saint-Émilion, the bottle from the château where you had lunch.
Is Troplong Mondot classified?
Yes: Saint-Émilion premier grand cru classé B since 2012, in the 2022 classification. The Saint-Émilion classification is revised roughly every ten years; the 2022 one runs until 2032. A château can move up, move down or withdraw.
Premier grand cru classé A or B: what is the difference?
Both are premiers grands crus classés. In 2022, only Figeac and Pavie hold rank A; the other premiers, including Troplong Mondot, are B. The letter doesn't always appear on the label; the price, however, reflects it.
When should you drink a Troplong Mondot?
Allow ten years before opening it and thirty years of good form, a little longer in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottles. The table applies this rule to every line; it is not a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
