The château
North-west of the town, on the plateau and its slopes. The name recalls the Jacobin (Dominican) monks who had vines there. The Decoster family has owned it since 2004 and has renovated it.
Mostly merlot, cabernet franc, a little cabernet sauvignon. A grand cru classé. A round wine, ready at around five or six years, which holds for fifteen or so, at a price that makes it one of the most affordable grands crus classés in the table. Clos des Jacobins is only 8.5 hectares, facing south, on limestone rock, clay and limestone scree. The vines, thirty years old on average, are planted with 80% merlot, 18% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. The estate's technical sheets show very different years: 2010 harvested from 5 to 19 October, at 35 hl/ha and 15.5% alcohol; 2015 and 2016 more generous, around 45,000 bottles each; 2019 at 36 hl/ha, for only 30,000 bottles.
What to serve it with

Which vintage for which occasion
For a wedding or a company dinner, a Saint-Émilion grand cru classé on every table, at a second-wine price (which Bordeaux for a wedding). For a birthday, the year of birth, if the table has it (birth-year vintage).
Is Clos des Jacobins classified?
Yes: grand cru classé of Saint-Émilion, in the 2022 classification. The Saint-Émilion classification is revised roughly every ten years; the 2022 one runs until 2032. A château can move up, move down or withdraw from it.
Why a grand cru classé at this price?
The Saint-Émilion classification has a lot of grands crus classés, and they don't all sell at the same level. Clos des Jacobins is still at a pre-fashion price: that's what makes it a good choice for a big table.
When should you drink a Clos des Jacobins?
Allow five years before opening it and eighteen years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottle. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
