The château
A vineyard of a few hectares on the limestone plateau, east of the town, next to Troplong Mondot. The von Neipperg family, owners of Canon-la-Gaffelière, have made a separate wine from it since 1996, in very small quantities.
Mostly merlot, cabernet franc. Premier grand cru classé B since 2012. A concentrated wine, ready at around ten years, which holds for thirty. The appellation's other châteaux are on the Saint-Émilion wines page.
The vineyard is 4.5 hectares of very silty clays over a rocky substrate: a shallow, poor soil that drains well and ripens early. It is planted with 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc, with vines 60 years old on average, and has been certified organic since 2014. In 2017, the frost of 27 and 28 April hit all the family's estates except La Mondotte; the wine is 70% merlot, at 26 hl/ha. The 2015 goes up to 85% merlot. The 2004, harvested on 9, 13 and 20 October, spent 18 months in new barrels.
What to serve it with

Is La Mondotte classified?
Yes: premier grand cru classé B of Saint-Émilion since 2012, in the 2022 classification. The Saint-Émilion classification is revised roughly every ten years; the 2022 one runs until 2032. A château can move up, move down or withdraw from it.
What is the link with Canon-la-Gaffelière?
Same owner, the von Neipperg family, and same team. Two separate vineyards: Canon-la-Gaffelière, larger, at the foot of the slope; La Mondotte, small, on the plateau.
When should you drink La Mondotte?
Allow ten years before opening it and thirty years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottle. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
