The château
On the limestone plateau, north-east of the town, around an 18th-century house. The insurance group La Mondiale has owned it since 2006 and has rebuilt the cellars.
Mostly merlot, cabernet franc, a little cabernet sauvignon and malbec. Grand cru classé. Ready at around six to eight years, it keeps for about twenty. The other châteaux of the appellation are on the Saint-Émilion wines page.
The vineyard covers 30 hectares in a single block, 800 metres from Saint-Émilion: 70% clay-limestone plateau, 17% clay slopes and 13% sandy foot of the slope. The soil is ploughed, with no chemical weedkiller and grassed rows. The château's technical sheets show blends that change markedly from one year to the next: 74% merlot in 2015, 63% in 2016 with 34% cabernet franc, 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc in 2017. In 2015 and 2016, the wine was aged in French oak barrels, 60% of them new.

Is Soutard classified?
Yes: Saint-Émilion grand cru classé, in the 2022 classification. The Saint-Émilion classification is revised roughly every ten years; the 2022 one runs until 2032. A château can move up, move down or withdraw.
Grand cru or grand cru classé?
“Saint-Émilion grand cru” is an appellation: several hundred châteaux are entitled to it. “Grand cru classé” is a rank in the classification, which few of them hold. Soutard has both.
When should you drink a Soutard?
Allow six years before opening it and twenty years of good drinking, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottle. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
Are the prices shown the prices on the quote?
They're the guide prices from the price list, incl. VAT, per bottle of the format, excluding delivery. The quote confirms the price, the availability of each vintage and the shipping; the delivery grid gives the lead times. For a vintage not in the table, the quote request is still open.
