The château
On the limestone plateau, west of the town, above cellars dug into the rock. The Bécot family bought it in 1969. Demoted in 1986, it regained its rank of premier grand cru classé B in 1996 and has kept it since. Juliette Bécot runs it; the family also owns Joanin Bécot, in Castillon.
Mostly merlot, with cabernet franc. A fresh, straight wine that owes a lot to the limestone. Ready at around eight or ten years, it lasts thirty. The appellation's other châteaux are on the Saint-Émilion wines page.
The vineyard, about 16.5 hectares, lies on the Saint-Martin de Mazerat limestone plateau, on clay-limestone soils with starfish limestone. The vines are around forty years old on average. Beneath the vineyard, Michel Bécot turned seven hectares of former underground quarries into cellars, where more than a hundred of the château's vintages are kept, sheltered from light and temperature swings. Today, the wine is aged for about sixteen months in new barrels, amphorae and large vessels. A new vat room and a new cellar were opened in 2023.

Is Beau-Séjour Bécot classified?
Yes: premier grand cru classé B of Saint-Émilion, in the 2022 classification. The Saint-Émilion classification is revised roughly every ten years; the 2022 one runs until 2032. A château can move up, move down or withdraw.
Beau-Séjour Bécot or Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse?
Two neighbouring properties that came from a single estate, divided in the 19th century. Beau-Séjour Bécot belongs to the Bécot family; the other, spelled Beauséjour, to other owners. The label carries the full name.
When should you drink a Beau-Séjour Bécot?
Allow eight years before opening it and thirty years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half-bottles. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
