The château
On the limestone slopes of Castillon, just east of Saint-Émilion. The Bécot family, owners of Beau-Séjour Bécot, bought it in 2001; Juliette Bécot runs it.
Merlot and cabernet franc. The same limestone as the best Saint-Émilions, at a fraction of the price: ready at around four years, it holds for fifteen or so.
The estate is in Saint-Philippe-d'Aiguille, in the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. It was called Château Joanin: the Bécots added their family name when they took it over. The wine is a blend of 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. The harvest goes over three successive sorting tables, undergoes a cold maceration, then ferments gently in large 70-hectolitre vats, with punching down by hand. The malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel.
What to serve it with
- With a meal: duck breast (wine with duck), roast poultry (wine with poultry), lamb (wine with lamb).
- With cheese: a Brie, a Comté (wine with cheese).
- At a buffet: charcuterie, cold meats.
Which vintage for which occasion
A Right Bank red for every table at a wedding, at the price of a party wine (which Bordeaux for a wedding). The oldest vintages in the table, well stored, make a surprise at the table. For a birthday, the year of birth (birth-year vintage).
Castillon or Saint-Émilion?
Two neighbouring appellations. Castillon extends the limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion to the east; its wines are close in style and much cheaper.
Should you keep it?
Ready at around four years, it holds for fifteen or so years in a good vintage. The table says, line by line, whether it's ready to drink.
When should you drink a Joanin Bécot?
Allow four years before opening it and fifteen years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottle. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
Are the prices shown the prices on the quote?
They are the indicative prices from the price list, incl. VAT, per bottle of the format, excluding delivery. The quote confirms the price, the availability of each vintage and the shipping; the delivery grid gives lead times. For a vintage not in the table, the quote request is still open.
