Wine for a 20th or 25th birthday: four hours of party, sparkling, rosé, and cheap
Between 20 and 25, it's often you who pays, sometimes with a kitty among friends. A flatshare, your parents' garden or a hired room, forty guests, four hours of party. The wine has to be cold, simple and cheap: sparkling to raise a glass, rosé to carry the evening, and plenty of soft drinks for those who are driving or don't drink.
The wine for the evening
Set for 40 guests: one hour of arrivals then three hours of party, 70% wine drinkers, “standard” level. Half sparkling, half rosé on arrival, a bit more sparkling afterwards; no red, no white. Some guests will stick to beer: that is why it goes below 80%.

Soft drinks and water
Out of forty guests, with five drivers and three who don't drink alcohol, the drinkers calculator counts 16 litres of soft drinks, eleven 1.5 L bottles, and 20 litres of water.
The raw count is 19 bottles; with the 8% margin and rounding up to the case for each colour, the calculator shows 24: 12 sparkling, 12 rosé, four cases. At the decent level, €384, under €10 per guest, three quarters of it for the sparkling, counted as champagne.
Cheap and cold
Two wines, no more, and a tub of ice that follows the party
The sparkling is what costs. The calculator counts it as champagne, which is supplied. Keep it for the toast: one case, thirty-six flutes, is enough for everyone to raise a glass. For the rest of the evening, crémant is possible on request, for noticeably less, price confirmed on the quote. For the rosé, a Bordeaux rosé or a clairet to drink within the year does the job perfectly: at that age and at that hour, nobody is looking for a wine for laying down, and that's fine.
Cold matters more than the label. Twenty-four bottles of sparkling and rosé won't fit in a flatshare fridge: a tub of water, ice and a handful of salt brings them down to temperature in twenty minutes, and a second one keeps the open ones cool. And let's be honest: with 35 guests or fewer and this running order, the calculator stays under 18 bottles and sends you to the local wine shop or the supermarket. It moves to cases from 36 guests. How many bottles for a 20th birthday with 40 guests?
Nineteen as a raw count for four hours, 24 rounded up to the case: twelve sparkling and twelve rosé. It's less than people think, because some guests drink beer or don't drink, and after the first hour everyone slows down. The general calculator does the same sum for your numbers.
How is it different from an 18th or a 30th birthday?
At 18, the parents buy, minors are present and you count 60% drinkers: the 18th birthday page does that count. At 30, the party lasts six hours, a cocktail reception replaces dinner and the budget goes up: the 30th birthday page comes to around fifty bottles. In between: four hours, two wines, a small budget.
What wine budget for a 20th or 25th birthday party?
Around €380 at the decent level for 40 guests, so under €10 a head, sparkling as champagne included; a little over €500 at the good level. Soft drinks, water and ice are counted separately. If everyone chips in, ten euros per guest covers the wine.
What about those who are driving?
Decide before the party who takes whom home, one driver per car, and give them something better than a bottle of lukewarm fizzy drink: cold soft drinks, sparkling water, a decent alcohol-free option. Stop the wine an hour before the end and leave the water on the table until the last guest leaves. The classic mistakes
- Buying red. At 1 am, in a room that's heating up, nobody wants it. Sparkling and rosé, full stop.
- Champagne from start to finish. Three quarters of the budget goes on the sparkling. Champagne for the toast, crémant afterwards, on request.
- Lukewarm bottles. Lukewarm rosé is the first complaint of any party. A tub of ice from the moment the first guests arrive, topped up every twenty minutes.
