Wine for your 30th: a standing party, sparkling and white
A 30th is celebrated standing up. No seated dinner, no seating plan: a flat or a hired room, forty friends who arrive at 8 pm and leave after 2 am. That changes everything for the wine: the cocktail part lasts three hours instead of one, red almost disappears, and keeping things cold becomes the real issue.

After midnight, two glasses per drinker, sparkling and rosé. About ten bottles. This is where people over-order most.
Keeping it cold
About fifty bottles to serve cold in a flat, with no cold room: two tubs of iced water, topped up, or a neighbour who lends their fridge.

The 1996 bottle
A great Left Bank vintage, to drink now
1996 is a great year for cabernet sauvignon: a mixed summer, a dry September, structured, long Médoc wines that took twenty years to open up. At thirty, they are in their window. The Right Bank, with more merlot, did less well that year: for a 1996, look to Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe, Margaux.
Allow €60–150 for a classified growth in good condition, more for the top names. Check the fill level and the provenance: a 1996 kept in a kitchen for twenty years is worth nothing. Open it seated, before the party, with four or six people and a dish to go with it: it is the only moment of the evening when anyone will actually taste something.

Champagne or crémant for a 30th?
Both have their place: champagne for the toast and the first hour, when people notice what they are drinking, crémant afterwards, when they are dancing. At 24 bottles of sparkling, the difference is €200–300. Crémant is available on request; champagne is supplied.
What wine budget for a 30th birthday party?
€500–800 in decent to good Bordeaux with champagne for half the sparkling, excluding soft drinks and glass hire. The calculator's table gives the three levels. The 1996 bottle is counted separately, €60–150. For a shorter party and a tighter budget, the page 20th or 25th birthday sticks to sparkling and rosé.
How do you keep fifty bottles cold in a flat?
Two 60-litre tubs with water, ice and a handful of salt, loaded twelve bottles at a time, twenty minutes per batch, and someone to reload. A domestic fridge holds twelve bottles and takes three hours: keep it for the toast's sparkling, and buy the ice on the day, fifteen kilos.
Thirty-something mistakes
- Buying red as for a dinner. Standing up at 11 pm, nobody drinks red. One case is enough, served cool.
- Forgetting that three hours of cocktails equal a meal. The calculator counts four glasses per drinker for the first part; a one-hour aperitif counts only two.
- Underestimating soft drinks and water. A six-hour party drinks as much water as wine. Two litres per person, half of it sparkling.
