The château
Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse were born from the division of a single estate in the 19th century; they face each other on either side of the château road, south of Pauillac, very close to Latour. The Pichon Baron château, with its turrets, is one of the most photographed in the Médoc. AXA Millésimes has owned it since 1987.
Mostly cabernet sauvignon, with merlot. A powerful, dense Pauillac that needs ten years and lasts thirty-five. Its second wine is called Les Tourelles de Longueville. The appellation's other châteaux are on the Pauillac wines page.
The estate covers 92 hectares of gravelly soils, poor and free-draining. It is planted with 66% cabernet sauvignon, 27% merlot and 5% cabernet franc, with a little petit verdot and sémillon; the vines are 35 years old on average. The grand vin comes mainly from the Pichon Baron mound, the historic plot, already under vine when the estate was founded in 1694. According to the château's notes, 2016 is dense and taut, with richness; 2017 goes for finesse and balance; 2019 is fleshy, “sunny and charming”; 2020 is fresh and precise, with a peppery finish.

Which vintage for which occasion

Yes. It is a second growth (deuxième grand cru classé) in the 1855 classification, in the Pauillac appellation.
Pichon Baron or Pichon Comtesse?
Two properties that came from a single estate, both Pauillac second growths. Pichon Baron, mostly cabernet sauvignon, is reputed to be more powerful; Pichon Comtesse (Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande), with more merlot, softer. Both age for a long time.
When should you drink a Pichon Baron?
Allow ten years before opening it and thirty-five years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half-bottles. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
