The château
On the Grand-Poujeaux gravel rise, the best in the appellation. Philippe Cuvelier, owner of Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion, bought it in 2008.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a little Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. A renowned Moulis, ready at around six years, which lasts about twenty, at the price of a cru bourgeois. The other Moulis wines are on the Moulis wines page.
The vineyard stretches in a single block over 70 hectares north-east of Moulis, at the top of the Grand Poujeaux rise, on Quaternary gravel. It is planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, at 10,000 vines per hectare, with vines thirty years old on average. The Petit Verdot, a small share, brings structure; the Cabernet Franc, complexity. The grapes are hand-picked into small crates, and the wine spends 12 months in barrels, 30% of them new.
What to serve it with

Which vintage for which occasion
A wine of classified-growth quality at the price of a party wine: for a wedding or a company meal (which Bordeaux for a wedding). For a birthday, the birth year, if the table has it (birth year vintage).
Is Poujeaux a classified growth?
No. No château in Moulis was classified in 1855. Poujeaux is among the most highly regarded in the appellation, along with Chasse-Spleen.
Where is Moulis?
In the middle of the Médoc, inland, between Margaux and Listrac. The smallest of the Médoc's six communal appellations.
When should you drink a Poujeaux?
Allow six years before opening it and twenty years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottles. The table applies this rule to each line; it is not a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
