The château
One of the best-known growths of Moulis, ranked among the crus bourgeois exceptionnels as early as 1932. Legend attributes its name to Lord Byron or Baudelaire, who supposedly found there something to chase away the spleen; nothing proves it, but the name stuck.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a little Petit Verdot. A wine for laying down, firm when young, ready at around six to eight years, and lasting twenty. The other Moulis wines are on the Moulis wines page.
The vineyard covered 130 hectares in 2022, 125 of them red, on 80% gravel; the purchase of Brillette brought it the last gravel ridge in Moulis it was missing. In 2009, a rainy spring followed by a very dry August and September gave even flowering and véraison. In 2013, the crop was halved, but the grapes were healthy. In 2016, the scorching summer was followed by a late, calm harvest. In 2017, after the frost of 27 April, the Cabernets came in more plentiful and “superb”.

Is Chasse-Spleen a classified growth?
No. No Moulis château was classified in 1855. Chasse-Spleen was long one of the crus bourgeois exceptionnels; it ranks among the most highly regarded in the appellation, along with Poujeaux.
Where does the name come from?
From the spleen, the melancholy, of the Romantic poets. Legend cites Byron or Baudelaire; the exact origin of the name has not been established.
When should you drink a Chasse-Spleen?
Allow six years before opening it and twenty years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half-bottles. The table applies this rule to each line; it is not a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
