Wine for a holiday home: villa, chalet, family house

What the tool assumes
On holiday, allow a third of a bottle per adult per day, aperitif included: a little more than at home, much less than at a wedding. In summer, rosé and white take up half the cellar, with a light red for the barbecue (see what wine with a barbecue); by the sea, a dry white for oysters (see what wine with oysters). In winter, red comes back, with champagne for the evenings.
- Without a cellar, order per stay. A house shut up in summer can go above 30 °C; a wine that spends two months there ages by several years. With a cellar or a wine cabinet, one order a year is enough.
- Someone has to take delivery. A caretaker, a concierge service, a neighbour, or delivery on the day you arrive. Lead times and costs are on the delivery page.
- For tenants, one welcome bottle per stay, and if needed a small cellar available to guests, with prices displayed.

How many bottles for a week's holiday for six?
About fifteen: a third of a bottle per adult per day, so two cases of six and a few extra bottles for guests who come for an evening. Whatever is left waits for the next stay, provided the house doesn't heat up in between.
Can wine be delivered straight to the holiday home?
Yes, as a parcel, provided someone takes delivery: a caretaker, a concierge service or yourself on the day you arrive. A delivery before each stay avoids storing wine in a closed-up house.
What wine should you leave for tenants?
A ready-to-drink welcome bottle, between €10 and €20, that says something about the region: a dry white Bordeaux in summer, a supple red in winter. Beyond that, a small self-service cellar with prices displayed is run like a minibar.
Do you need a cellar in a holiday home?
Not to drink during stays: orders by the season are enough. A cellar or a wine cabinet becomes useful if you want to keep wines from one year to the next or entertain often.
