Wine for a chalet in Megève
Christmas and New Year, the February holidays, a few weeks in summer: a chalet fills up in waves, and in winter people drink red and champagne there. What to plan, how to get it up there, and what is better bought in Savoie.
How many bottles for a season

What matters in the mountains
- Wine freezes. At around −5 °C, the bottle pushes out its cork or bursts: no cases left in the car overnight, or in an unheated garage or ski room.
- Have it delivered before the snow, or before you arrive, and arrange who takes delivery: caretaker, concierge service, neighbour. A chalet at the top of a snowy road is harder to deliver to than a house in town. Lead times and cost on the delivery page.
- A chalet heated all winter is not a cellar. At 21 °C, wine keeps for a season, not five years. To keep it from one year to the next, a wine cabinet.

When you don't need us
For fondue, Savoie wine is bought in the resort, and for a weekend for two, the village wine shop is enough. An order makes sense for a whole season, the year-end holidays for ten, or great wines the resort doesn't have.
Which wine with a Savoyard fondue?
A Savoie white, lively and light: Apremont, Chignin, Roussette de Savoie. Buy it locally; a tannic red makes the cheese heavier.
How many bottles for a ski week for eight?
Around nineteen, or four cases of six: mostly red, one case of champagne, a few whites.

Is wine harmed by the cold?
It is harmed by frost: at around −5 °C, it can freeze and push out the cork. Above zero, cold doesn't damage it, it just closes it up; bring it back up to temperature before serving.
