Wine for a house in Cap Ferret

A cabin in Piquey, a villa at Le Canon or L'Herbe: people live there mainly in July and August, the house fills up, and the wine is drunk with oysters. What to plan, when to have it delivered, and what is better bought locally.

Entre-deux-Mers, white Graves, Bordeaux sauvignon: the wine for oysters, prawns and the seafood platters at the oyster shack.

A quarter

Rosé and clairet

The aperitif at sunset, the beach, grilled sardines.

A case or two

Supple red

Bordeaux Supérieur or Côtes de Bordeaux for the barbecue, served cool, around 15 °C.

A few bottles

For friends arriving, a birthday, 15 August.

The pairings are set out on wine with oysters.

What matters on the Cap

  • Have it delivered before you arrive. In summer, the road down the peninsula is jammed on Saturdays: the cases are better off already in the house than in the boot.
  • Someone must be there to receive it. Caretaker, concierge service, neighbour, or yourself on arrival day. Lead times and cost on the delivery page.
  • No stock from one season to the next without a cellar. A closed-up house heats up in summer and gets damp in winter; order for the season, not for three years.
  • Oysters are bought at the shack, from the oyster farmer, in the morning. The wine, however, needs planning.

When you don't need us

For a weekend for two or four, one or two bottles bought in the village will do. An order makes sense from a few cases up: a week with several people, a summer month, a party in the garden.

Which wine to drink with oysters from the Bassin?

A dry white, lively and young: Entre-deux-Mers, Bordeaux sauvignon, white Graves. Avoid oaked whites and reds, which the iodine makes taste metallic.

How many bottles for a week in Cap Ferret for eight?

Around nineteen, so four cases of six: two of white, one of rosé, one of red. Add a case if you have friends over one evening.

Can you get wine delivered to Cap Ferret?

Yes, by parcel, if someone is there to receive it. Order early: in July and August, carriers are busy. Lead times and costs are on the delivery page.

What to do with the wine left over in September?

Take it home, or leave it only if the house stays cool. Otherwise, order just enough and top up in the village at the end of your stay.

Other houses

Across the water, Arcachon and Le Pyla, where people come all year round. Further south, the Basque Country. In winter, a chalet in Megève.
