Two wines, one estate

Château La Croix de Gay
The estate's wine. Mostly merlot, a little cabernet franc. Round and supple, ready at around five years, it keeps for about fifteen.
Château La Fleur de Gay
The cuvée drawn from three small plots on the Pomerol plateau, in small quantities. Denser, more expensive, it keeps for twenty years.
In the north of the Pomerol plateau, on gravel and clay. Pomerol has never had an official classification. A château's price there says more about its reputation than any rank: from twenty euros to several thousand for Pétrus. The other châteaux of the appellation are on the Pomerol wines page.
La Croix de Gay's vines surround the hamlet of Pignon, the old village of Pomerol, on reddened Günz gravel over a subsoil of blue clay veined with iron oxides, facing north. 95% merlot. La Fleur de Gay comes from 2.44 hectares in three plots on the high terrace: a rise of gravel 5 to 8 metres deep overlooking Château Lafleur, 0.15 hectare of pure blue clay between Pétrus and Lafleur-Pétrus, and the Groupey plot, between Le Pin and Trotanoy, where cabernet franc also grows: 3,000 to 6,000 bottles a year.

Which vintage for which occasion
A Pomerol at a table-wine price for a wedding or a family meal: merlot pleases the most people (which Bordeaux for a wedding). For Christmas or New Year's Eve, with the poultry (what wine with Christmas dinner). For a birthday, the birth year, if the table has it (birth-year vintage).
Is La Croix de Gay classified?
Pomerol has no official classification. No château in the appellation, Pétrus included, carries a rank on its label.
What is the difference between La Croix de Gay and La Fleur de Gay?
Same estate. La Fleur de Gay comes from a single plot, in small quantities, and keeps longer; La Croix de Gay is the wine of the whole vineyard, ready sooner and less expensive.
When should you drink a La Croix de Gay?
Allow five years before opening it and fifteen years of good drinking, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottle; for La Fleur de Gay, eight to twenty years. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
