The château
Its cellars are on the quays of Pauillac, beside the Gironde; its vines, in several plots, border Mouton, Pontet-Canet and the Grand-Puy plateau. It belongs to the Crédit Agricole group.
Cabernet sauvignon and merlot. One of the most affordable Pauillac classified growths, ready at around eight years, holding for about twenty. Second wine: Prélude à Grand-Puy-Ducasse. The other châteaux of the appellation are on the page Pauillac wines.
The estate covers 40 hectares spread over eleven soil types. In the north, a gravel mound on a marly limestone base; in the centre, the historic plots of the Grand-Puy lieu-dit, on gravelly-sandy soils over clay; in the west, the sandy Artigues area, kept for merlot. It is 59% cabernet sauvignon, 36% merlot and 5% petit verdot. The 2009, “the charmer” according to the château, comes from a summer even drier and sunnier than 2005. In 2015, the September showers were absorbed by the drainage of the cabernet plateau at the edge of the estuary. The 2016 withstood the August heat thanks to the spring rains.

Grand-Puy-Ducasse or Grand-Puy-Lacoste?
Two separate fifth growths. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is usually dearer and more structured; Grand-Puy-Ducasse, ready a little sooner, is the budget choice.
When should you drink a Grand-Puy-Ducasse?
Allow eight years before opening it and twenty-two years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half-bottle. The table applies this rule to each line; it is not a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
