The château
Pauillac's only fourth growth, next to Lafite Rothschild on the Milon hillside. The Rothschild family (Lafite) bought it in 1962 and replanted it; the same team makes both wines.
A large majority of cabernet sauvignon, merlot. A tight wine, ready at around eight or ten years, which holds for twenty-five. Second wine: Moulin de Duhart. The appellation's other châteaux are on the Pauillac wines page.
In the north of the appellation, the vineyard covers 76 hectares almost in a single block, on the hillside that extends the Carruades de Lafite plateau. It is bordered by more than 100 hectares of marsh, meadow and woodland. The soils are sandy gravels laid down in the Quaternary, with varying shares of stones, sand and clay; the largest plots are mainly gravel, with more than 10% clay. The planting is 67% cabernet sauvignon and 33% merlot.
What to serve it with
- A vintage ten years old or more: Pauillac lamb (wine with lamb), game birds (wine with game).

- With cheese: an old Comté (wine with cheese).
Which vintage for which occasion

Is Château Duhart-Milon a classified growth?
Yes. It is a fourth growth (quatrième grand cru classé) in the 1855 classification, in the Pauillac appellation. It is the appellation's only fourth growth.
What is the link with Lafite Rothschild?
Same owner since 1962, same technical team, neighbouring vines. Yet they are two vineyards and two wines: Lafite, a first growth, costs nearly ten times as much.
When should you drink a Duhart-Milon?
Allow eight years before opening it and twenty-five years of good form, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottle. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
