The château
A small classified growth next to Cos d’Estournel, on the same rise, in the south of the appellation. Michel Reybier and his family, owners of Cos d’Estournel, took it over in 2023.
Mostly cabernet sauvignon, merlot, a little cabernet franc and petit verdot. One of the most affordable classified growths in the Médoc: ready at around six years, it keeps for about twenty. The other châteaux of the appellation are on the Saint-Estèphe wines page.
The name comes from the hill of Cos and from François Labory, owner until 1845. The estate later belonged to Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel. The 35 hectares form several blocks on the deep-gravel plateau of the Cos hill, with clay and a limestone base, on slopes facing north and west. Three blocks at the top of the plateau, where the oldest vines are, give the grand vin. The average age of the vineyard is 38 years; it is planted half with cabernet sauvignon, a third with merlot.
What to serve it with

Is Cos Labory a grand cru classé?
Yes. It is a fifth growth (cinquième grand cru classé) in the 1855 classification, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation.
Is it related to Cos d'Estournel?
Not by ownership. The two châteaux share the Cos rise, from which they take their name. Cos d’Estournel, a second growth, costs several times as much.
When should you drink a Cos Labory?
Allow six years before opening it and twenty years of good drinking, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottle. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
