The château
On a gravel mound in Arsac, in the west of the appellation: the “tertre” (mound) of the name. The Albada Jelgersma family, who run Giscours, bought it in 1997.
Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, with some cabernet franc and petit verdot. A fresh, fragrant Margaux, ready at around six or eight years, that keeps for about twenty. The other châteaux of the appellation are on the Margaux wines page.
The estate covers 80 hectares, including 52 hectares of vines in the Margaux appellation in a single block, on one of the highest gravel rises in the Médoc, at about 24 metres above sea level. The soil mixes fine, deep gravel, clay and sand; merlot is planted on the clay soils set aside for it. At the foot of the slope, on a cooler sandy-gravelly soil sheltered by a pine forest, 6 hectares have produced a white wine since 2014, Tertre Blanc: chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, viognier and a touch of gros manseng. The estate also makes a red second wine, Les Hauts du Tertre, to be drunk younger.

Which vintage for which occasion
A Margaux classified growth at the price of a good second wine: for a wedding or a company dinner, on every table (which Bordeaux for a wedding). For a birthday, the birth year, if the table has it (birth-year vintage).
Is Château du Tertre a grand cru classé?
Yes. It is a fifth growth (cinquième grand cru classé) in the 1855 classification, in the Margaux appellation.
Du Tertre or Giscours?
The same family runs both. Giscours, a third growth, is more structured and more expensive; Du Tertre, a fifth growth, can be drunk a little sooner.
When should you drink a Château du Tertre?
Allow six years before opening it and twenty-two years of good drinking, a little more in a great year, a little less in a weak year or in half bottle. The table applies this rule to each line; it isn't a tasting note, and a badly stored bottle ages faster.
