Wine for a 70th birthday: the family meal, and what to open instead of a 1956
A 70th birthday is celebrated around a table: forty or so guests, lifelong friends, the children, the grandchildren. The wine at the meal is the one people notice. And the birth year poses a problem you are better off knowing before you start looking: 1956 is a weak year in Bordeaux, and a bottle of 1956 disappoints more often than it moves anyone.
The wine for the meal
Set for 40 guests: a one-hour aperitif followed by a seated meal, 75% drinkers. Grandchildren under 18, drivers and those who have given up wine for health reasons make up the remaining quarter. If the party carries on into the evening, tick that box.

Two glasses per drinker, sparkling and white first, while people arrive and hug. About ten bottles for 30 drinkers.
The meal
Three glasses per person: a white with the starter, two reds with the main course and the cheese. Fifteen bottles. This is where the budget is decided, and where the exceptional bottle finds its place.
The toast and the cake
A flute for the children's speech, at dessert. The case of sparkling from the aperitif covers it if you keep two bottles chilled.
The raw count is 25 bottles; the calculator shows 36 after the 10% margin and rounding up to full cases per colour: 12 red, 12 white, 6 rosé, 6 sparkling. Without rosé, the case of white covers the aperitif and you go down to 30.
The 1956 bottle
A weak year, and three honest ways to do it differently
1956 is the year of the February frost: exceptional cold devastated the Bordeaux vineyards, the Right Bank above all, and the wines born that year were thin. Our scale ranks it as a weak year, and the birth-year vintage tool gives the same verdict: not recommended, give something else. Seventy years on, a bottle of 1956 is opened for the label, not the wine, and the risk of a flat glass in front of the whole family is real.
First option, the neighbouring year: 1955 is a great year on our scale, structured, still dignified in well-kept great growths, and 1959, also great, is holding up remarkably at the top. Allow €200 to €500 for a bottle of classified growth with verified provenance, far more for the most famous names. Second option, the decade: “a wine from the fifties” works just as well at the table, and 1953, 1955 and 1959 are three great years.
Third option, the safest: a great bottle from a recent vintage that is already ready, 2009 or 2015 for example, in magnum, €80 to €300 depending on level. No risk of a tired cork, twelve glasses for the top table, and a wine everyone will like. You can also aim for the year of another milestone, the wedding or the birth of the first child, often a better year and easier to find.

How many bottles for a 70th birthday with 40 guests?
Twenty-five in the raw count for an aperitif and a meal, 36 rounded up to full cases: 12 red, 12 white, 6 rosé and 6 sparkling, a little under a bottle per guest. For about twenty guests, the calculator drops below 18 bottles and tells you that you don't need us.
What wine budget for a 70th birthday?
About €400 for 40 guests at standard Bordeaux level, €624 at good Bordeaux level, champagne for the aperitif included. Go up a notch on the red for the meal rather than on the sparkling: that is the wine a generation that knows its wine will taste. The exceptional bottle is a separate budget, from €80 for a recent magnum to several hundred euros for a 1955 or a 1959.
Is a 1956 wine still drinkable?
Almost never with pleasure. The year was weak to begin with, and seventy years have passed. If the date matters more than anything, open it for the gesture, in small pours, with a back-up bottle alongside. If the wine matters, choose 1955, 1959 or a great recent vintage: the birth-year vintage page gives the verdict on every year from 1945 to 2010.
Should the top table have a different wine?
Yes, and it is money well spent: one or two exceptional bottles for those closest, a solid Bordeaux for the other tables. Ten years earlier, the question was the same: the 60th birthday page deals with it using a great vintage, 1966, still found in magnum. Ten years later, the 80th birthday page does the same sums for a lunch.
How to prepare the meal
- Two months before: decide between 1955, 1959, the decade or a great recent vintage. For an old bottle, check the provenance, the fill level and the label before ordering.
- One week before: delivery, the old bottle standing upright somewhere cool, whites and sparkling chilled the day before.
- On the day: open the exceptional bottle with the main course, at 16 °C, without long decanting, with a back-up bottle close at hand. Serve it at the top table, and say where it comes from.
