Wine for a 50th birthday: the party, and the bottle from the year
A 50th birthday means two different purchases. The wine for the party, counted in cases for sixty or so guests. And the bottle from the birth year, chosen one by one, which for someone born in 1976 calls for a few precautions.
The wine for the party
Set for 60 guests: an hour-and-a-half aperitif, seated dinner, two hours of party, 80% adults who drink. A family birthday with grandchildren goes down to 70%.
What the evening gets through

The 1976 bottle
A hot, dry, tired vintage
1976 in Bordeaux was the year of the heatwave and the drought, followed by rain at harvest. The wines were born supple, low in acidity, made to be drunk within their first fifteen years. Fifty years on, most are past it: brick-coloured, the fruit gone, a bottle opened for the date and not for pleasure.
A few great estates in the Médoc and Pessac-Léognan are still holding up, provided storage has been impeccable, and they are priced as rarities. The risk is real: a bottle bought without provenance on an auction site has a one-in-two chance of disappointing.
What we advise: if the budget allows, a 1976 from a great estate with verified provenance and fill level, opened at the start of the meal in front of everyone, with a back-up bottle. Otherwise, an alternative that has the same effect: a magnum from a solid vintage that is already open, such as 2015 or 2016, or a great wine from the year of the wedding, the children, or another milestone. How many bottles for a birthday party of 60 people?
About sixty, all colours together, with aperitif, dinner and party: roughly one bottle per guest. For a dinner alone with no dancing, about thirty is enough. The calculator does the exact count by colour and rounds it up to cases of 6.
What wine budget for a 50th birthday?
€600 to €900 for 60 guests with Bordeaux that is good without being lavish, champagne for the aperitif included. The calculator's table gives the three levels. Add the bottle from the year separately: from €80 for a modest 1976 to several hundred for a great estate.
Is a 1976 wine still drinkable?
Rarely well. The vintage was hot and dry, the wines made to be drunk young, and fifty years have passed. Only well-kept great estates still offer something. If the date matters more than the wine, open it for the gesture with a back-up bottle alongside; if the wine matters, choose another year.
Should family and friends have different wines?
No, but the aperitif and the dinner should. Standing, people drink sparkling and white without paying attention. Seated, with the main course, a good red gets noticed and talked about. That is where the spending shows, not in the sparkling at the start. If the party brings the whole family together over a weekend, the family reunion page counts several meals.
50th-birthday mistakes
- Buying the 1976 bottle the day before. An old vintage has to be found, checked and left standing upright for a week before it is opened. Start two months ahead.
- Counting the grandchildren as drinkers. At 50, people often have children aged 15 to 25 and parents of 75: the share who drink wine is closer to 70% than 80%.
- Planning a wedding-length party. Two hours of party, not four. Unopened cases of rosé are not taken back.
