How much wine for a housewarming for 30 people?
A housewarming means a flat still full of boxes, thirty friends standing, crisps, a sharing board, and well-chilled white and rosé. The count is quick, and it should be said straight away: at this size, your local wine shop or the corner supermarket is enough. Here are the quantities, and the point at which a wine merchant becomes useful.

Set for 30 guests: three hours standing, 75% drinkers, because many come by car to a neighbourhood they do not know yet. White and rosé, no red or sparkling: add them if the season or your friends call for it.

Everyone gets shown round with a glass in hand. Twenty-two drinkers, forty-five glasses: seven to eight bottles, mostly chilled white.
The evening
People settle wherever they can, on the sofa, the balcony, the boxes. One glass an hour per drinker: another seven to eight bottles over two hours.
What guests bring
People rarely turn up empty-handed at a housewarming. Expect one guest in three or four to arrive with a bottle, and only half of those to be opened that evening.
The raw count is 15 bottles; with the 8% margin, the calculator shows 17, by the bottle: 10 white, 7 rosé. That is below the threshold of 18: it does not round them up to the case, and it tells you that you don't need us.

The calculator switches to cases when the quantity goes over 18 bottles, margin included. With this running order, three hours standing and 75% drinkers, that happens at 34 guests: the count then jumps to 24 bottles, twelve white and twelve rosé, two cases per colour. At 40 guests, 30 bottles. Below that, buying in cases of six would have you paying for bottles that stay in the hallway.
Seventeen bottles of white and rosé is a trip to the local wine shop, which will suggest two fresh wines and sometimes chill them for you. A dry white Bordeaux or a rosé to drink within the year costs €8 to €14: the budget is around €140 to €225. A screw cap is a good idea here: no corkscrew to dig out of a box, an opened bottle that closes again, and a fresh wine to drink young, for which a natural cork adds nothing. How many bottles for a housewarming for 30 people?
Fifteen as a raw count for three hours standing, 17 with the margin: about ten white and seven rosé, a little over half a bottle per guest. If your friends drink red, swap three or four of the whites. For a different headcount, the general calculator does the same count with no presets.
Should you count the bottles guests bring?
Half of them. They arrive unannounced, not always chilled, and many are gifts you would rather keep. Buy the calculator's count, open the bottles brought if they fit, and keep the others for later: that is the start of the cellar.
What wine to serve with a sharing board and crisps?

What goes wrong at a housewarming
- A new fridge, empty… or already full. Seventeen bottles will not fit in a kitchen fridge with everything else. A bathtub or a bucket of ice does the job, thirty minutes before the first arrivals.
- No glasses. The glasses are in a box nobody knows the number of. Hire thirty, or get reusable cups.
- Too many different wines. Two wines are enough, three at most. Beyond that, everything gets opened, nothing gets finished, and the next day the worktop is covered in half-empty bottles.
- Forgetting those who don't drink. A quarter of the guests: sparkling water, juice, a lemonade. That is what runs out first.
