Wedding · the day-after brunch

Wine for the day-after wedding brunch: twelve bottles, and the ones left from the night before

On Sunday morning, fifty guests who stayed over drink a flute and a half each, no more: ten bottles, sparkling and rosé. That is roughly what a wedding's margin leaves in the cases. Planned properly, the brunch costs almost nothing in wine; its main job is to finish off the previous day's order, since unopened cases are not taken back.

The calculation for the brunch alone

Set for 50 guests and 80% drinkers: a flute and a half per drinker, half sparkling, half rosé. The calculator counts by the bottle, 12 bottles, and for a brunch on its own you don't need us.

What is left from a wedding of a hundred guests

The settings from the wedding wine page: a two-hour drinks reception, a seated dinner, three hours of evening party, 100 guests. “Drunk on average” is the model's consumption, without margin; “Left over” is what the 10% margin and rounding up to the case leave if the party drinks like the average.

ColourOrderedDrunk on averageLeft overAt the brunch
Sparkling42366A brunch for 50 needs 5. It is the colour that carries over best.
Rosé24195The brunch needs 5. Served chilled, with salads and eggs.
White30264For salmon, scrambled eggs, fresh cheese. A dry white happily replaces some of the rosé.
Red30264Rarely in the morning. It leaves with the couple, or gets finished at lunch if the brunch runs on.
Total12610719A brunch for 50 drinks 10.

On average, the wedding's margin is the brunch. But it is only an average: an evening that drank well leaves two bottles of sparkling, one that ended early leaves a case. Hence the method below.

Building the brunch into the wedding order

Unopened cases are not taken back, with us as with most wine merchants. The right way to handle that risk is not to order less for the wedding, but to give the margin somewhere to go: the brunch.

  1. A single order: the brunch's 12 bottles on the wedding quote, delivered the same day to the same place. One delivery instead of two; the rates, to be confirmed, are on the delivery page.
  2. On Saturday evening: set aside two sealed cases, one of sparkling and one of rosé, before the bar opens them. If the party runs short, it takes them; if not, they make the brunch.
  3. On Sunday morning: serve the bottles opened the night before first, recorked and kept cool, then the opened cases, and only after that the sealed ones. A case still sealed at noon can be kept.
  4. The remaining red and white go home with the couple or the family. Three or four bottles per colour if the calculation was done here, no more.

How many bottles for a brunch of 50 people the day after a wedding?

Twelve: six sparkling, six rosé. Forty drinkers at a flute and a half each makes ten bottles; the calculator adds an 8% margin, because a brunch is taken standing or as a buffet, and rounds up to the bottle. 0.24 bottles per guest: the day after, people mostly drink coffee, juice and water.

Which wine to serve at the day-after brunch?

Sparkling and rosé, chilled and light. The previous day's champagne is fine if there is any left; crémant, on request, costs less for a moment when nobody is comparing. A dry white goes with eggs and salmon. Red has no place before noon, unless the brunch turns into lunch. To count the sparkling for the whole celebration, the wedding champagne page does the calculation.

How much does the brunch wine cost?

For 12 bottles, €192 at the decent level, €264 at the good level, €378 at the top end, or €4–8 per guest, with champagne making up most of the bill. If the wedding's margin covers the brunch, nothing extra: that is the argument for planning it in the same order.

Can unopened cases be returned after the brunch?

No. Transvins does not take back unopened cases, like most wine merchants, and we would rather say so before the order than after. That is why the calculator keeps a margin of 8–10% and not 20%, and why this page makes the brunch the destination for the margin. For a party over a whole weekend, with two meals and a brunch, the family reunion page counts all the moments together.
